What is a Friend?.......

There has been much talk around here lately concerning what constitutes friendship.  Depending upon how one defines it, friendship can be very easy to attain or very difficult.

What really is a friend?  Are there different types of friendship?  Why do friendships seem to come and go?  Why are lifetime friendships so rare?  When a trusted friend disappoints us or betrays our trust, is that person still a trusted friend?

Other than God's love, or maybe the love of a pet dog, is there such a thing as "unconditional love"?  I mean, Cindy says she loves me unconditionally.......but, if I repeatedly lie to her, cheat on her and dishonor her, I don't think that statement applies any more.

What IS a friend?

  1. I do think there are many types of friendship and some that are only meant to be short term. But to define it is very difficult because a friend can be so many things. I will be curious to see how others do.

  2. A friend is one who helps me be the best possible me. I don't think friendships ever really end. They do, over time, become different. That's my two cents worth for today. Have a great weekend. Blessings...Mary

  3. i've got too much in my mind to really think about this one, but i can say there are friends/family members that i love but don't really care to be around too often. it's that i just don't always have the energy for it, though i love them and pray for them and wish them all the best. i have met a few kindred spirits on the same page as me, and it's just effortless to be myself with them... though if life and relationships were effortless, there'd be no space for growth...

hope you are enjoying your weekend!

  4. This is indeed a difficult question. True friendship develops. My truy friends are my husband and Bundy the cat

  5. I know what unconditional love is, it's a mother's love for her offsprings.
My eldest as you know has recently disowned me, If I knew why I could perhaps right a worng but I don't. The last time we spoke on the phone all was well, but I have had 2 weeks of abusive text messages, I have rung him but the phone remain unaswered, I have text him but that only produces more abuse......Yet I love him, perhaps he has problems I know nothing about,
perhaps he is not well (he did have cancer 4 yrs ago) but I carried him for nine months, gave birth to him and helped along with his dad set him on his feet for life. Sure I'm hurt but is he hurting more??????

  6. I think that in the truest sense of the word, the only true friend there is and ever will be is Jesus. We are just all too imperfect to be a true friend to anyone (including ourselves)at all times. But isn't that the beauty of friendship - acceptance? Have a blessed day, my friend!

  7. Ahhhh....this can turn into some deep thinking. I've been (struggling) through some tricky relationships lately and it does make one step back and think- just what IS friendship, unconditional love, (and even LIKE);))) I have yet to figure it out....

  8. I agree with Vilisi who posted above. I think she expressed it perfectly. Our one true friend is Jesus Christ and us flawed humans can't be expected to always be a true friend to anyone.

  9. Friends for me are those who are enjoyable to be around and whom I can count on and they can count on me, maybe not for everything but the big things. Rarely does one friend fit all needs.

  10. For me a friend is a person who I can count on in every situation where I need it.

You don't have to be in contact every day or week, but you must know that you are welcome every hour.

  11. Hi Clint -

    Interesting post...

I love and forgive but have learned that friendship needs to be proven.

JESUS CHRIST is the best friend ever!
