28 Hours, Part III.....Kentucky Fried Chicken and Cumberland Falls

After touring the Taxidermy Museum and the town of Williamsburg, we headed up the road to Corbin, Kentucky.  Corbin is famous for being the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Colonel Harland Sanders, as colorful a persona who ever lived, led a rags-to-riches life that featured his crowning achievement:  the creation of a fried chicken recipe that was unique and delicious.

Colonel Sanders was also a marketing genius, decades ahead of his time, and he sold his recipe and cooking methodology to restaurants all across the country in the 1940s and 1950s.

"It's Finger-Lickin' Good!"
I recall the first time I ever ate his chicken---it was in 1958 at the Blue Grass Inn in Houston, Texas, where I lived at the time.  It was sensational.  My dad thought so, too, because he kept taking his family back again and again.

An Original Vat of His Secret Recipe of Eleven Herbs and Spices

Today, I suppose the chicken is just as good as it was in the old days, but the newness of his unique recipe of "eleven herbs and spices" back then was unforgettable.

After Cindy and I had finished touring the old, original location of KFC, we hopped in the car and headed 15 miles west to Cumberland Falls State Park on the Cumberland River.

I Love Waterfalls---How About You?

One of the Few Waterfalls in the World that Captures a Moonbow at Midnight

Moonbow in the Moolight at Cumberland Falls
After basking in the mist of the falls, we headed home.  What a wonderful journey!  But oh---we were tired when we got back to the ole homestead---too tired to cook, that's for sure.  So, we decided to treat ourselves to the world's best pizza---Papa Murphy's.
Large, Thin Crust, Triple Meat Pizza From Papa Murphy
You order it and take it home and cook it.  We like the large, thin crust, triple meat selection.

Cindy Sautees Onions, Peppers, Olives and Mushrooms
Cindy adds the green peppers, onions, mushrooms and black olives and then bakes it.  It costs $8.00.  If I'm lyin', I'm dyin'.

The Finished Product---Oh Yeah, Babe....
Twenty-eight hours on the road....what a trip!  And what memories!

  3. I too remember that first bite and even later if I went to KFC I got the original recipe. Following that chicken truck a while back has turned me off of chicken period but if I ever slide off the wagon, I'd probably let the Col tempt me.
    That moonbow was awesome.

  6. love the moon bow! and i swear, the Colonel and his minions add some sort of narcotic as one of those 11 herbs and spices. a few years ago, i went thru a summer of craving KFC like i've never done before. HAD to have it (and no, i wasn't pregnant). i had to break the addiction finally...

  7. So many gorgeous places in this great country. Those waterfalls are spectacular. When we visited the college my daughter went to in rural New York state, we discovered a state park nearby with equally as spectacular waterfalls. I remember seeing rainbows just like that. The park was only four hours away from where I'd grown up. I remember thinking, "How did I not know about this place?" Always something new to discover, it seems.

  10. Kentucky is one of four states I've never been to, and I was so close! I'd love to see that Cumberland Falls! We used to go to Fall Creek Falls...can't remember where that was, but it was a lovely drive and nice place to visit.

I love KFC too...but I always wondered where he really got that recipe from...I've always speculated that it didn't originate with him...

Hey, I'm poking my head in here to let you know...we're coming to your neck of the woods next week! I'll email you! :)Would love to meet you!!!

  12. Moon Bow sounds amazing. I've seen many daytime rainbows at many falls, but this sounds intriguing. As for that 28 hr. trek, what a way to end it but with Papa Murphy and Cindy additions. Looks fantastic!
Also, would love to see the museum...Bill's kind of place.

  13. KFC was something my grandmother would want us to have on days she didn't cook - which was not many. So good and a special treat for us to have. Now the one near us has failed too many times so hopefully somewhere they are having food the right way.

Now we have a Papa Murphys near us but never tried. What size pan do you use? I have cookie sheets but not anything big. or do you just use the rack/foil?

  21. As a kid, I lost my first tooth on a Kentucky Fried Chicken and my heart was broken (not because I lost a tooth, but because I couldn't eat the food!). Great photos!
