I had awakened early---about 4:00---and was just lying in bed, letting my thoughts run free. Somehow, an old song came into my consciousness. It was a song I only heard about three times in my life, and the last time I heard it was in 1965.
How I recall any of the words so many years later is one of those mysteries. I liked the song very much. The chorus was:
The sun always rises,
The sun always rises,
The sun always rises
Every morning of the year.
So when you feel you can't go on,
Just wake up, and with the dawn,
The sun always rises,
And the darkness disappears!
I repeated these words in my early morning stupor and thought about them. And then, after all these years, a deeper, more meaningful meaning hit me---If you substitute the word "Son" for "sun", you have a wonderful parable of a poem. Especially so since the Son rose after his nightfall on the cross just like the sun rises after night has run its course.
As I lay there, I was amazed not only that I remembered the words after 45 years, but that I only now had connected the deeper meaning of the lyrics.
Then I was reminded of a moment a few years ago, when I was listening to an old cowboy song, "Cool, Clear, Water". It had been a favorite of mine since childhood. I always thought the song was about a thirsty cowboy and his horse out in the desert. Well, it is and it isn't. The deeper meaning, it occurred to me, was spiritual:
The shadows sway and seem to say
"Tonight we'll pray for water"...
Cool water.
And way up there He'll hear our prayer
And show us where there's water...
Cool, clear water.

In the stillness of the early morning, I began to wonder just how many things in life happen to us on a daily basis that have a much deeper meaning if we would only look and listen for it.
Here's another one, just off the top of my head:
Mary had a Little Lamb,
It's fleece was white as snow;
And everywhere that Mary went
Her Lamb was sure to go...
Can you think of common things in your life that have a much deeper meaning?
Nice food for thought. (And I grew up with that Cool Clear Water song too. :))
ReplyDeleteI did not know this song was like a parable until about the time you discovered the deeper meaning. I had wondered why it was on a Gaither DVD, a song about a man and horse in the desert?
ReplyDeleteIt seems the closer one gets to God, the more parables seem to become evident. Love the Marty Robbins version of the song.
And now the song is stuck in my head... "Oh Dan can't you see that big green tree, where the water's runnin' free and he's waitin' there for you and meeeeeee... water..."
ReplyDeleteTexwisgirl---Not a bad song to have stuck in the noggin'...
ReplyDeleteYou will the strains of that song in the heads of all your readers by the time day is done. I'm off to think of other things that might have deeper meanings. Have a great day. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteOh, I like this song. And I love country music.
ReplyDeleteBut what are you doing so early in the morning, singing and wake the sleeping Cindy?
Many greetings from Germany
Sabine
I thought the song was wonderful and also how you saw the difference between "sun" and "son".
ReplyDeleteOne common thing in my life which have a deeper reason is my four grandchildren.
My late husband only lived to see the first born and that was only for 2 months, well I had three more in quick succession, the second was my daughter's son, he to me was a miracle because she was told she would never be a mother. two weeks later my third grand child was born and the following year my only grand daughter entered this world ten weeks early weighing just 2 lbs..........on my birthday, 10 years on she is a fit and healthy "Tom boy" I think I have them to love and cherish on earth as their grandfather loves them from above.....
Four lovely legancies.
Yvonne.
I love these songs- never heard them before. It is amazing how many things tie back to Jesus.
ReplyDeleteMary---if you think hard enough, you will discover that so many everyday things are packed with a deeper meaning. Thanks for commenting!
ReplyDeleteSabine---Ha! No, I did not wake up Cindy---that wouldn't be smart! :)
ReplyDeleteYvonne---miracles are occuring in your life through your grandchildren...congratulations!
ReplyDeleteKaren---isn't it the truth? What could be more ever-present in life than Him?
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing more beautiful to express love, the beauty of nature and feelings into words with music.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day
Petra
I hope only that you will wake up EVERY day
ReplyDeletejust singing!
Greetings from Athens!

Hi Clint -
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing...
I enjoyed this piece. In particular, Mary had a little Lamb. I had never read those lyrics as a Christian. It makes a vast difference.
Glory to the Lamb of GOD who takes away the sin of the world!
